Verdict
HubSpot is the default for teams that want CRM, marketing, and service on one platform, and its free tier is real. Pipedrive wins when one visual pipeline is the whole job. Attio wins when the data model must match your business. Close wins for outbound-heavy inside sales. folk fits very small relationship-led teams. Zoho CRM wins on price for breadth.
The picks
- 01
HubSpot — best for teams that want CRM, marketing, and service on one platform, with a real free tier under it.
Don't use it if you need automation on a budget, quality marketing automation gates at Professional ($800/mo) and Professional onboarding is a required $3,000 one-time fee.
- 02
Pipedrive — best for small teams that want one visual pipeline and nothing else.
Don't use it if you need bundled marketing, email marketing is a separate add-on and full email sync starts on the $39 Growth tier.
- 03
Attio — best for teams that want the CRM data model to bend to their business instead of the reverse.
Don't use it if you need call intelligence or sequences on a budget, both sit on Pro at $79/user/mo billed annually.
- 04
Close — best for outbound-heavy inside sales teams that live in calls and email.
Don't use it if your motion is marketing-led, Close ships no marketing product and its own integrations directory routes the job to HubSpot or Drip.
- 05
folk — best for very small teams running relationship-led outreach with AI assistants doing the busywork.
Don't use it if you need deep workflow automation or enterprise reporting, folk's automation is trigger-based campaigns and sequences.
- 06
Zoho CRM — best for budget-conscious teams that want the widest toolkit at the lowest price.
Don't use it if you value polish and a shallow learning curve, the UX and integration depth trail the leaders and the edition maze is real.

The fork: platform or pipeline
This category splits by what the vendor thinks a CRM is for. HubSpot and Zoho sell a platform: CRM plus marketing, service, and a dozen adjacent tools under one roof. Pipedrive and Close sell a motion: a pipeline board (and in Close’s case a dialer) tuned for how deals actually move. Attio sells a data model you reshape, and folk sells relationships with AI assistants doing the follow-up work. Pick the operating model first, then the table almost reads itself.
Where the money hides
Sticker prices mislead in this category. HubSpot’s Professional tier needs a one-time $3,000 onboarding and Enterprise needs $7,000, both stated on the pricing page. Pipedrive’s headline seat price excludes the Campaigns, LeadBooster, and Projects add-ons that most teams end up buying. Close meters AI features in credits per user per month (500 to 2,000 by plan). Zoho’s edition maze gates email sync behind Standard and journeys behind Professional. Model the second year, not the first invoice.
Free tiers that are real
A free tier is only real if it survives contact with your pipeline. Here three do: HubSpot (2 users, 1,000 contacts, no expiration), Zoho CRM (forever free, 3 users), and Attio (3 seats with enrichment). The other three sell 14-day trials. The trial-only vendors are not hiding a catch, their free plans simply do not exist, which is an honest position the table shows directly.
Original data
We benchmark AI-crawler access across these six vendors: who blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended, who ships an /llms.txt, and how fast the pages respond. Methodology and limitations are on the benchmark page. It matters because a CRM that blocks answer engines is choosing not to be quoted, and that choice shapes which tools LLMs recommend when a founder asks for CRM advice.
What we did not test
We have not run hands-on pipeline usability testing, migration effort measurement, or email deliverability benchmarks, which are the tests this category deserves. Until we run them, usability claims stay out of our tables entirely, and the numbers shown are the vendors’ own dated pages.
FAQ
What is the best CRM for a startup?
Start on a free tier and upgrade by bottleneck. HubSpot's free plan (2 users, 1,000 contacts, no expiration) carries most early pipelines, Zoho CRM is free forever for 3 users, and Attio is free for 3 seats. Pay when you need email sync at scale (Pipedrive Growth, US$39/seat), calling and SMS in the CRM (Close), or marketing automation (HubSpot Professional, $800/mo plus a $3,000 onboarding fee).
Is there a free CRM that is actually free, not a trial?
Yes, three of the six compared here. HubSpot's free CRM is free indefinitely for up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts. Zoho CRM's free edition is forever free for 3 users. Attio's free plan covers 3 seats with contact syncing and enrichment. Pipedrive, Close, and folk offer 14-day trials only, no free plan.
HubSpot or Pipedrive?
Platform versus pipeline. HubSpot bundles marketing, service, and content hubs around the CRM, with costs that compound (Professional is $800/mo plus $3,000 onboarding). Pipedrive does one visual pipeline well, from US$14 per seat monthly-annual, with marketing as a paid add-on. Small teams that only manage deals save money on Pipedrive. Teams that run marketing in the same system end up on HubSpot.
Which CRMs have genuinely native email sync?
All six platforms compared here sync email natively, but plan placement differs. Close and Attio include it broadly. Pipedrive's full sync starts at the Growth tier and folk's at Standard. Zoho CRM includes it from Standard up, and HubSpot logs Gmail and Outlook natively on free tools. No tool here requires an extension for ongoing inbox sync.
Which CRM is best for outbound calling?
Close. It builds calling, SMS, and email into the CRM with a power dialer (Growth, $109/user/mo monthly) and a predictive dialer on Scale. Pipedrive and Zoho sell calling as add-ons or integrations, and HubSpot's dialer lives in Sales Hub paid tiers.
