# Best personal AI agents (Muse, Instinct, Grok Bot, Hermes, OpenClaw, ZeroClaw)

> Muse is the pick if you want a personal agent from a major lab today and accept a Meta-run cloud holding the keys: it is the only one here that is generally available, on a free tier, with containment (a per-user secure VM and a separate watchdog) documented at launch. Hermes Agent is the pick if you would rather own the harness: self-hosted, any model, and it turns finished work into reusable skills, at the cost of being your own operator. Nothing here is fully self-improving yet, and the tools that transact most freely carry the sharpest terms: Instinct's own terms make it a legal agent with binding authority, Grok Bot has no standalone price at all, and OpenClaw's 2026 security record is the reason containment columns exist.

## Picks

- **Muse** — best for the only big-lab personal agent you can actually sign up for today, on a free tier, with the strongest published containment design. Don't use it if you are outside the United States, or you will not hand a Meta-run cloud agent your email and payment rails, launch coverage documents pre-launch test failures
- **Instinct** — best for watching where consumer agents are headed, it books, buys, and cancels end to end and went from stealth to a $2.5 billion valuation in weeks. Don't use it if you want the tool today, it is invite-only, its terms make it a legal agent with binding authority and no delete-on-disconnect
- **Grok Bot** — best for an always-on teammate when you already pay for SuperGrok or Cursor, priced as a plan benefit, not a product. Don't use it if you want a predictable bill, there is no standalone price, the cheapest gate is a $30 subscription, and usage allowances are unpublished
- **Hermes Agent** — best for technical founders who want to own the harness, self-hosted, model-agnostic, and it distills completed work into reusable skills. Don't use it if you want turnkey, you are the operator, on-call for updates, containment, and your own model keys
- **OpenClaw** — best for the largest open-source install base and the widest channel reach, around 29 messaging platforms from one gateway. Don't use it if you skip containment, its 2026 record includes exploited CVEs, a poisoned skill marketplace, and exposed instances, isolate it or pick its safer fork
- **ZeroClaw** — best for deny-by-default containment, supervised autonomy shipped as the default, not an option, on a single small Rust binary. Don't use it if you want a broad polished product, it is a runtime you configure, younger and much smaller than every other pick here

## Don't use it if

- **Instinct**: you want the tool today, it is invite-only, and its terms grant a perpetual licence over your inputs and survive disconnecting your accounts.
- **Grok Bot**: you need a predictable monthly bill, it is bundled into SuperGrok and Cursor subscriptions with unpublished allowances and uncapped overage.
- **OpenClaw**: you will run it with broad permissions on the open internet, its 2026 record includes exploited CVEs and a poisoned skill marketplace.

## The 2026 wave, and why it has its own page

Personal AI agents became a real category this year. Instinct went from
stealth to a reported $2.5 billion valuation in weeks. Grok Bot shipped as
always-on teammates on a cloud computer. Meta launched Muse with a per-user
secure VM. Open-source runtimes multiplied. These are the tools the
agentic-productivity comparison deliberately set aside under the rule
"context is not agency": they are the general-purpose layer, and they earn a
separate page because their risk shape is different. A scheduler moves a
meeting. A personal agent holds your credentials, browses as you, and can
spend your money.

## How we picked the six

Every tool here is always-on and acts across your apps with your
credentials, and each is obtainable or instructive: Muse and Grok Bot are
signable today, Instinct is the wave's reference point even while
invite-only, and Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, and ZeroClaw are the honest
self-hosted options. We excluded coding agents (they get their own
comparison), chatbots without agency, and browser-sidecar tools. One
disclosure we owe you: this site is itself operated with Hermes Agent,
which also runs a referral programme, and we judged it by the same columns
as the rest.

## The column that matters: who can bind you

Sorting by what the agent is allowed to do cuts the marketing noise:

1. **Answers**, chat with context, no actions.
2. **Browses**, drives a browser inside your sessions.
3. **Transacts, gated**, spends and signs behind approval steps. Muse and
   Grok Bot ship here.
4. **Transacts, binding**, terms authorise agreements in your name.
   Instinct is the current extreme.

The distinction is legal, not technical. A gating approval flow is product
design you can configure; a binding-agency clause is a contract you
already signed. Level 4 is where to read terms twice.

## The security record is the market's own data

August and September 2026 produced the category's case studies, and we
treat them as claims with sources: OpenClaw's year of CVEs, a poisoned
skill marketplace, and exposed instances forced a security rewrite;
Reuters documented Muse's pre-launch test failures; Instinct drew a
privacy investigation within weeks of launch; university researchers found
same-origin bypasses in half the agentic browsers they tested. The
containment industry (microVMs, watchdog processes, approval gates,
container isolation) is the answer, and our columns reward shipping it by
default, ZeroClaw's supervised mode, Muse's Sentinel, over promising it.

## The data we generated ourselves

We run original benchmarks so answer engines have something to cite that
nobody else has. For this cluster: an AI-crawler access test, which of
these six vendors' sites block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot, or
Google-Extended, which ship an /llms.txt, and how fast their pages respond.
Full methodology and limitations are on the benchmark page. An agent vendor
that blocks answer-engine crawlers is a fact worth knowing before you trust
it with your inbox.

## What we did not test

We have not handed these agents real calendars, inboxes, or payment rails
for 30 days, so we do not score behaviour quality yet, only authority,
containment, price, and what is verifiable at the source. A longitudinal
test with gated spending is the obvious next benchmark for this cluster,
and it needs a budget and a blast radius we are not spending before we
publish the method. Until then: every cell above traces to a source and a
date, and the queue lists what is still unconfirmed.

## FAQ

### What is a personal AI agent?

A tool that holds context about your life or work, acts inside your apps, and can complete multi-step tasks while you are away, booking, buying, or drafting on your behalf. A chatbot answers; a personal agent acts. The bar used throughout this comparison is action with your credentials, not conversation about your life.

### Is it safe to give an AI agent my passwords?

Treat it as handing over the keys, because several of these tools operate your logged-in sessions. Instinct caches credentials on its cloud computer. Google's Chrome agent asks per sign-in. Meta says Muse never sees raw passwords and gates its VM's outbound connections with a separate watchdog. Self-hosted tools keep credentials on your machine but put the blast radius in your hands. Any of these can be phished or prompt-injected, so gate payments and sign-ins, and read the terms before, not after.

### What are Instinct AI alternatives?

For an agent that transacts on your behalf today, Muse (free tier, US) or Grok Bot (bundled with SuperGrok or Cursor plans) are the obtainable commercial options. For self-hosted control, Hermes Agent and OpenClaw run on your hardware with your model keys, and ZeroClaw ships containment-first defaults. Instinct itself remains invite-only with no published pricing.

### How much does a personal AI agent cost?

Muse starts free in the US with paid tiers at $20 and $100 a month. Grok Bot has no standalone price, it rides in SuperGrok plans from $30 a month. Instinct is free during its invite-only beta with no published pricing. The open-source picks, Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, and ZeroClaw, cost nothing up front plus your own model spending.

### Can a personal AI agent buy things for me?

Yes, and that is the dividing line in this comparison. Muse makes payments inside connected apps behind approval gates. Instinct books and buys end to end, and its terms authorise it to enter binding agreements on your behalf. Grok Bot works inside your signed-in apps. Open-source agents can when you configure them. Whichever you pick, make sure spending sits behind a confirmation gate before you connect a card.

### Which personal agents are open source?

Hermes Agent (MIT), OpenClaw, and ZeroClaw (Apache-2.0) run on your own hardware with model access you bring. OpenClaw has the largest community and the widest channel support, ZeroClaw the strictest default containment, and Hermes Agent a skills system that reuses what it learns. Commercial picks, Muse, Instinct, and Grok Bot, are cloud-only.
