OpenAI ships GPT-6.1 Terra at half the price of GPT-6.1 Sol, built for computer use and high-volume work

OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026, a fast, efficient model for visual reasoning, computer use and high-volume professional tasks. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens — 50% below both GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. The model is live in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans, and via the API as `gpt-6.1-terra`; the model card lists a 1,050,000-token context window, 922,000-token maximum input and 128,000-token maximum output. OpenAI reports 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort, more than double GPT-5.6 Terra's published 21.5%, and says the same usage allowance covers more tasks in ChatGPT Work and Codex than GPT-5.6 Terra did.

What it means for buyers

The cost floor for computer-use agents keeps falling: a model priced at half of GPT-6.1 Sol makes high-volume browser and desktop automation practical where per-task cost previously ruled it out, and Codex plans stretch further on the same usage allowance — directly relevant to the coding-agent value math in our ai-coding-assistants comparison and to anyone pricing an agent built with the tools in our ai-agent-builders comparison. OpenAI's own positioning still routes the hardest coding tasks to GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, so Terra is a volume tier, not a frontier tier.
